Examen de traducción de las Naciones Unidas


Dos meses en Nueva York pasan volando, bueno en NY y en cualquier sitio en el que te encuentres a gusto. Esta entrada debería haberse publicado antes, pero durante el último mes me he mudado tres veces y no he tenido suficiente tiempo para The Life Overseas, así que pido disculpas por la tardanza. Ya me he despedido de la oficina de la ONU (nos organizaron un desayuno de despedida rico, rico), y quería contaros lo que nos han dicho sobre la preparación del examen. Vayamos por partes.

¿Dónde se publica la convocatoria?

UN Careers, ahí podréis ver todas las ofertas de trabajo y los exámenes. También podéis crear una alerta para que os envíen automáticamente las ofertas del departamento que os interese (se puede hacer una vez os hayáis registrado). Aquí está la información sobre los exámenes.

¿Qué es lo más importante?

Se buscan buenos traductores, que no tienen que conocer necesariamente el lenguaje onusiano. Nuestra supervisora hizo hincapié en que lo más importante es redactar en un buen español.

¿Cómo me preparo?

Hay que leer un poco de todo. No hace falta volverse loco con The Economist, aunque sí que viene bien leer algunos artículos (conviene tener en mente que es una fuente potencial de textos para examen). Un día le dije a mi supervisora que me iba a leer El País y me contestó: no, lee literatura, buena literatura. Tampoco significa que no haya que leer los periódicos. Todo sin olvidar nuestra segunda lengua.

Aquí podéis ver un modelo de la parte tipo test. Esta parte sí tiene que ver con documentos de la ONU. Conviene echar un vistazo a los documentos más importantes en nuestras tres lenguas: la Carta de las Naciones Unidas, la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos, el Informe Anual del Secretario General, la Declaración del Milenio, etc.

Aquí hay un modelo de examen antiguo, la parte de traducir frases se ha reemplazado por las preguntas tipo test.

2012 Examinations for Editorial and Desktop Publishing Assistants in English, Spanish and Chinese - Applications are Now Being Accepted

These examinations are open to all interested applicants who me
et the educational, work experience and language requirements as specified in the Job Openings in the United Nations Careers Portal (careers.un.org).

The Editorial and Desktop Publishing Assistants posts are located in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) in New York. Appointments against these posts will be on a local basis and appointees are not entitled to international benefits. These positions provide support in the production of major camera-ready documents and by formatting them in desktop publishing layouts. The accurate production of these documents is vital to the intergovernmental process among the Member States of the United Nations.

In order to qualify for each examination, applicants must have the following:

1. High school diploma or equivalent;
2. At least three years’ work experience in desktop publishing or a related field, including draft typing, copy editing, formatting, proof-reading and creating typographical layouts;
3. English, Spanish or Chinese as a main language; and,
4. Fluency in oral and written English.

Each examination consists of the following tests in the applicant’s main language:

(i) Typing test (54 words/minute);
(ii) Grammar and spelling test;
(iii) Direct dictation test (verbatim); and,
(iv) Text formatting test.

There will be a separate English language skill assessment.

The written examination will be held in New York in September 2012; the precise date and location will be determined according to the number of invited candidates, who will be advised directly at a later date.
